Jewelry-making at Highpoint
A new homeschool support program has formed to serve the Stanwood-Camano homeschooling community. Weekly Monday morning sessions began in October 2016 and have restarted after the Christmas/New Year's holiday.
Every Monday morning, from 10 am to 1pm, homeschooling families are invited to meet at Restoration Church, 788 Smith Road, at the north end of Camano Island, for three sessions, each an hour long. All homeschoolers are welcome regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof. No sign-up or registration is required and sessions continue throughout the school year, excepting holidays. The typical Monday morning schedule is as follows:
10-11: board games, building materials, some parent-led sessions
11-12: homework/study time, with some guided creative movement for the younger crowd
12-1: rotating parent-led sessions, or board games/building materials if a child prefers
This is a uniquely flexible program for our local homeschooling community. Some families may want to arrive late or leave early and both are fine. The drawing supplies, board games and building materials are available for kids who choose to use them at any point throughout the day, and volunteer coordinators and parents are sharing their skills leading sessions such as jewelry-making, dance and various arts and crafts in the first and third hours. Families should bring water bottles and may want to bring snacks. Leading one of the parent-led sessions is not required, though if you have knowledge or skills that you could share, that would be wonderful, and all families are expected to help with clean-up and putting tables and chairs back in order at the end of the day.

SCHA attended the Warm Beach Christmas Lights on December 28, the last Pay-What-You-Can Night in 2016. For those new to the area, the Warm Beach Camp in Stanwood puts up more than a million Christmas lights spread over 15 acres, with vendors selling hot cocoa, cider, various snacks and filling meals. The display and activities are open for about 20 nights in December and there are generally four nights when visitors can choose how much to pay for the entrance fee with no minimum.
The Not Back to School picnic officially kicked off the 2016-17 academic year, for those that follow that type of calendar, and much fun was had. It was great to see both new and familiar faces at the park and, breaking a long-standing tradition, I actually took a few photos to commemorate the event.
Some of our kids are getting older and they are going to take the reins in organizing events this year, with some parental support along the way. Check back at this website for Park Days; with unpredictable fall weather, we are taking a more loosey-goosey approach to scheduling this year.
Summer is drawing to a close and for many of us, our daily and weekly routines will be adjusting to a new schedule.
One tradition I've always enjoyed that marks the transition from summer to fall is the Not Back to School picnic. Kick off your year by joining local homeschoolers and potential homeschoolers at Freedom Park (the park at Terry's Corner on the north end of Camano Island) for a brown bag picnic on Monday, September 12 (the Monday after Labor Day), from noon to 3:00. New families are welcome!
To keep up with SCHA activities this year, sign up for the newsletter (see the link on the left hand sidebar). Instead of weekly Park Days, which are too often derailed by unpredictable weather, we're going to organize park and skating outings as the weather agrees and families are available. Reading the newsletter and checking back on the SCHA calendar will help keep you up-to-date on what's going on.
Stanwood Camano Homeschool Adventures
Stanwood Camano Homeschool Adventures is a support group for the whole family.
What is a support group? We get together for park days, blueberry picking, visits to Cama Beach. If you want to plan a field trip, great, go for it! If you just show up once a year, we'll be glad to see you. We're friendly homeschoolers supporting each other, no stress, no commitment.
Watch the Upcoming Events for activities.
